Wheatley – Flueæskernes “hedengange” Rolls-Royce

Der findes tusinder – hvis ikke millioner af Wheatleys fluebokse. Dels de med 6, 12 eller 24 små rum med et lille låg og en fjeder anordning. Eller dem med op til ca. 100 aluminiums clips. Både i base og låget. 

Richard Wheatley startede allerede i 1860 med af lave de første flueæsker – eller retteligt læderpunge. De var ligeledes inddelt i et par lag med et lædermellemrum.  De første fluebokse med alluminiumclips, kom til takket være Richard Wheatley´s ældste søn omkring 1880. Omkring 1900 blev aluminium introduceret i produktionen.

Wheatley Fly BoxI 1908 kom de første ruminddelte flueæsker og  man lavede en særlig slebet aluminiums overfladefinish, som man faktisk anvendte helt frem til 2013 hvor Wheatley desværre måtte dreje nøglen om. De sidste originalt producerede alluminiums fluebokse forlad fabrikken et halvt år senere. 

Referencen til Rolls-Royce skyldes, at man helt ind til lukningen af produktionen i 2013, håndbyggede og samlede alle indvendige dele i boksene, uden brug af maskiner. Det var med hånden. Lige som de der bestiller en Roll-Royce ved at rigtigt meget af bilen er håndsamlet. Man får således funktionel håndbygget kvalitet til yderst rimelige priser. En virksomhed som har overlevet så mange konkurrenter og kopier i mere end 100 år, siger lidt om Wheatley boksenes unikke funktionelle og designmæssige kvaliteter.

De traditionelle laksefiskere har i flere generationer – helt frem til nutiden, været særdeles begejstrede for de modeller der var ventillerede. Mange modeller har små huller i såvel bunden såvel som i låget. Godt tænkt.
