It’s old and often cited knowledge that trout and grayling find most of their food sub surface. And it’s true. That makes it important to carry imitations of the food items the fish are used to seeing. Caddis nymphs, stonefly nymphs, scuds and of course may fly nymphs. The Simple Yarn nymph is an easy to tie fly and just as easy to adjust in size and colour to match different species. It can be weighted with copper wire, tungsten or lead (if allowed where you fish). The yarn can be anything, as long as it’s thin enough. Wool yarn soaks water making the fly sink readily.
