Gravel shelves were almost invented for nymphing. Perfect micro habitat in the slope of incoming gravel, overhead cover, pockets of dead water for trout to hold, and a constant supply of oxygen and food drifting the current is a prime lie. Targeting this trout stream habitat with deep running nymphs can catch a lot of trout quickly. But what do you do when there’s a mayfly hatch, the trout aren’t rising and you can only use one single, barbless fly? Let’s have a go at effective nymphing on gravel shelves!
