Here we will be tying a Blue Bottle variant. The bluebottle (Calliphora vomitoria) and greenbottle (Lucilia caesar) are common and widespread. They belong to the group of insects we generally call blowflies. Their larvae feed on dead animal tissue, and even though we think of them as nature’s cleaners, the adults can transmit diseases to humans. They also play a positive role as pollinators when flying from flower to flower, feeding on nectar. These insects are often shiny and metallic looking, featuring blue, green, or black thoraxes and abdomens. As a kid fishing with my father, I actually often try to catch these flies and use them as a live bait! How young and stupid I was LOL. Enough of the biology! Blue Bottle flies are and excellent option for both stream and lake fishing. The fly catches both brown trout and arctic char and is relatively simple and quick to tie. It’s also pretty in some way because of it’s metallic shining. It is totally worth to have some bottles in your fly box when you go fishing.
