Split tail shad

EP (Enrico Puglisi) style flies are quite popular. They have been staples in many saltwater and warm water fly Fishermans boxes for years. They look so realistic and are very versatile with color choices. However there is one issue Ive found in the past with these flies. They don’t have a ton of tail movement. Also the back ends tend to just taper off, and don’t form any type of tail. I fixed this issue with the addition of some hackle on the back end. And I split this hackle to give it a bit of a “tail” look. I believe this improves the style greatly and really makes this fly not only look more realistic, but also gives it some better action.

Now, I personally have not seen this done before. I did come up with the idea on my own. This does not mean that it hasn’t been done in the past. With 1000’s if not more tiers out there, im sure someone has thought of this idea and implemented it as good or better than I did. So if you have seen this done before, please tell me who the original tier was so I can say here. However I have been tying this now for a few months, and I still have yet to see an identical fly. So I do believe ive come up with a new pattern here. But again, I would love to hear from all of you whether this is true or not. Either way, what I have tied has worked wonders for those who I have sold them to. So give it a try and use this tutorial on how to tie it yourself. Or you can always purchase them from me as well.
