In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Max ties the Higa’s SOS!
Higa’s SOS was created by guide Spencer Higa as an all-around Baetis imitation. The SOS stands for “save our skin” as this fly has helped many guides put fish in the net on a tough day. I swapped some material around from the original. The tail is normally black pheasant tail fibers, the wingcase is red floss, and the dubbing is black Australian possum dubbing. Ice dub can also be used in place of the superfine dub I used. Try tying it with a tungsten bead, no bead, and a brass bead. The weight of your flies will dramatically affect the way you are fishing it. If you have never tied on a Higa’s SOS, you need to give it a shot.
